Downtown Master Plan Proposal
City of Kyle

With the growth of Central Texas in recent years, the City of Kyle has welcomed an unprecedented number of new residents. This change presents an opportunity for the city to develop in a sustainable way that reflects the needs and personality of its community; for this reason, BGKA has worked with the City of Kyle to develop a proposal for their Downtown Master Plan that would be centered on the 12 blocks around the newly-renovated Mary Kyle Hartson Park.

This proposal would take several years to complete, so to keep excitement for the project going, several existing sites around Downtown Kyle, such as the Historic Kyle Creamery building and alley spaces between historic buildingsaround Downtown Kyle would feature installations. This would give residents the opportunity to enjoy parts of the city that exist in a refreshing way, and also provide insight into things to come.

The Downtown Master Plan proposal has another purpose of serving as a template for future development for the rest of the city; in this vein, BGKA proposed a material palette that the city could build upon. Featured in this palette were brick blends specifically crafted for Kyle - the dark-red Kyle Civic Blend to be used in civic and institutional work, and the cream Kyle Commons Blend to be used in a variety of architecture. Additionally, several patterns of limestone coursing were explored for potential use.

Throughout this process, community feedback was invaluable to ensuring that the changes proposed reflected the desires of residents. The City and Kyle and BGKA together conducted multiple public engagement events to collect resident's thoughts on the proposal throughout its creation. A questionnaire asking residents their thoughts on planning issues currently affecting Kyle and what they would like to see in the future was distributed through these events, as well as through the City's website and social media, resulting in over 1200 responses being collected.
